Algeria’s Sonatrach restarts Skikda LNG plant

Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas company, Sonatrach, has resumed operations at its Skikda liquefied natural gas plant after a 7-month stoppage, Kallanish Energy reports.

Operations were restarted on July 16, Sonatrach announced earlier this week, following required maintenance works. The company said that a problem identified with a turbine, the plant was shutdown in December so a repair could take place.

The significant work is a reassurance on another 10 years of operation of the 4.5 million tonnes per annum plant, Sonatrach said in statement.

The company said its production and exports haven’t been affected during the maintenance, as Sonatrach’s complex in Arzew, west Algeria, increased production.

During a visit to the facility, CEO Toufik Hakkar also checked progress in the expansion project to build a new LNG jetty and port infrastructure. Construction activities at the project, which is currently 23.14% complete, had been halted due to the pandemic and national restrictions.

“Work has resumed with the objective of making up for the delay recorded for nearly three months, in order to allow the commissioning of this project by the end of 2021,” highlighted Hakkar. (July 24, 2020)
