U.S. prepares new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The U.S. State Department has already warned the European companies that help in the construction of the pipeline about possible sanctions. The U.S. prepares a new set of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as Reuters reported.

It is noted that the U.S. State Department has already warned the European companies that help in the construction of the pipeline about possible sanctions.

Soon, the U.S. State Department should publish a report about companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 construction. The report might include the companies that deal with the insurance, helping to lay the undersea pipeline, or verify the project’s construction equipment.

The European companies, including German, received requests from Trump’s administration during the past few months starting in October. The State Department asked the companies whether or not they participated in the Nord Stream 2 construction and whether or not the works were held after July 15 and the cost of any services or support. U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo warned the investors of the Russian gas pipeline that they might face sanctions in accordance with the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.

“On January 1, the State Department reached out again with an urgent request, the industry source said, asking to set up a call that weekend with the Bureau of Energy Resources to discuss the details of the companies’ wind down activities,” the message said.

Washington believes that the Nord Stream 2 will make Europe more dependent on the Russian gas. According to U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo, Washington works on the creation of the coalition to prevent the end of the construction. Germany and some other European countries held discussions about possible sanctions also concerning the Nord Stream 2 amid the poisoning of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

However, at the beginning of October, the Danish Energy Agency granted a permit to operate a section of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, subject to a number of conditions ensuring the safe operation of the pipelines.

Earlier, Nord Stream 2 AG Company finished the works on the construction of the part of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the exclusive economic zone of Germany. (January 13, 2021)
