First-ever modular LNG FSRU ready for deployment.

The world’s first-ever modular Liquefied Natural Gas Floating Storage and Regasification Unit  is ready for deployment in Senegal. Following the conversion of a 125,000m³ LNG carrier into a Modular FSRU by engineering company GAS Entec, the gas-to-power vessel is ready to serve Senegal’s shore-based grids.

Owned by KARMOL – a joint venture comprising Turkish power producer Karadeniz Energy Group and Japanese transport company, Mitsui OSK Lines – the new M-FSRU has capacity to scale from 15 to 300 million standard cubic feet per day.

In addition to reducing Senegal’s carbon emissions from power generation, the M-FSRU is, the world’s first modular floating LNG regasification terminal, delivering gas from LNG to Karpowership’s 236 MW floating power plant, the Karadeniz Powership Aysegul Sultan in Port Dakar.

With Senegal’s gas-rush expected to usher in a new era of gas-directed investment and with large-scale regional projects – such as the 15 trillion cubic feet (tcf) Greater Tortue Ahmeyim development and the 13 tcf BirAllah LNG project – coming online in the next few years, the M-FSRU will be instrumental in delivering gas-based power for the MSGBC region, on the back of viable LNG supply.

“This is a big moment for KARMOL and for Africa. With the successful completion of the M-FSRU, Senegal will be the first country in west Africa to transition to clean gas energy, replacing high emission fuels with LNG,” stated Gokhan Kocak, Board Member of KARMOL, adding that, the company will reliably deliver regasified LNG to Karpowership’s floating power barge and proudly pass along this clean energy in a commercially-compelling way to the amazing, high-growth country of Senegal.

GAS Entec – a subsidiary of Atlantic Gulf & Pacific International Holding – was responsible for the complete design which included the Front-End Engineering Design together with class approval, production design engineering, supply of regasification technology, commissioning of essential regas equipment as well as the installation works necessary for building the M-FSRU.

“We are honored to have been asked to design and lead the conversion of the LNG carrier to an M-FSRU. We are very excited to deliver to Senegal this key clean, floating, scalable terminal that operationalizes Karpowership’s Gas-to-Powership project, a leader in Africa and the world,” stated the CEO of GAS Entec, Chong-Ho Kwak.
