P2X breaks ground on Finland's first industrial-scale green H2 plant.

Finnish Power-to-X technology provider P2X Solutions Oy has officially launched the construction of a 20-MW project that will create Finland’s first commercial-scale green hydrogen production site.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, attended by company officials and Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintila.

To be located in the town of Harjavalta, in the province of Western Finland, the plant will produce green hydrogen with technology provided by Germany's Sunfire GmbH. The complex is planned to become operational in 2024, with some of its output planned to be processed into renewable synthetic fuels, such as synthetic methane. According to the developer's estimates, the production will help lower Finland's carbon dioxide emissions by 40,000 tonnes annually.

“We believe that the Harjavalta plant is only the first development step in taking Finland to the top of the European hydrogen economy,” said Esa Harmala, chairman of P2X Solutions’ board.

The Helsinki-based company will invest about EUR 70 million (USD 76.1m) to build the industrial-scale park. The project is supported by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy and the Finnish Climate Fund with EUR 36 million in funding.

P2X Solutions, which was founded in 2020, aims to install 1 GW of green hydrogen production capacity by 2031. (January 24, 2023)
