GreenGo plans EUR-8bn green energy park in Denmark.

Solar developer GreenGo Energy Group a/s is planning to build a green energy park in Denmark, powered by 4 GW of wind and solar energy, to produce more than 1 million tonnes of green fuels annually.

The energy park, dubbed Megaton, will be located in the Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality, western Denmark, and will require investments of about DKK 60 billion (USD 8.75bn/EUR 8.06bn).

The integrated facility will include a 2-GW electrolysis plant which should be operational before 2030. The production of green fuels at the park will be powered by a mix of solar and wind energy -- about 2 GW will come from onshore wind and solar projects in GreenGo Energy's development portfolio in the municipality and a further 2 GW will be added from the company's offshore wind development portfolio in Denmark.

The combination of the energy sources is expected to generate 11.5 TWh annually and ensure the stable and balanced operation of the electrolysis plant. More than 85% of the power will be used at the energy park for the production of green fuels while the surplus heat and power will be fed into the local district heating system and used for new industries such as greenhouses and vertical farming.

"With the Megaton project and the development of one of the world's largest energy parks in Western Jutland, we will once again put Denmark on the world map as a leader in the transition to 100% green power and the green fuels that are necessary to achieve the global climate goals towards 2050," commented GreenGo Energy's chief executive Karsten Nielsen.

GreenGo Energy will partner on the mega project with the Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality which sees great potential for creating value in the region. The initiative will create between 300 and 500 permanent local jobs and lead to new business opportunities such as vertical farming.

Megaton is expected to play a key role in Denmark’s ambition to quadruple onshore renewable energy and build an electrolysis capacity of 4 GW-6 GW by the end of this decade. (January 25, 2023)
