Jera, ReNew to explore green ammonia production in India

Japanese power utility Jera Co and Indian renewable energy company ReNew Energy Global Plc will assess the potential for jointly producing green ammonia in India.

The initial agreement between the parties concerns a project in Paradip, in the Indian state of Odisha, ReNew said on Friday. If the study that aims to evaluate the commercial viability of the project delivers positive results, the companies will install a production facility that will be capable of making roughly 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030. The manufacturing will be underpinned by 500 MW of high-capacity utilization factor renewable energy capacity.

Under the plan, Jera will have the right to offtake the green ammonia volumes for export to Japan.

“This joint development agreement represents a significant milestone and an exciting advancement moving us one step closer to realizing decarbonized society, with a focus on the sustainability, affordability, and stability of future energy,” said Yukio Kani, Global CEO of Jera.

The project bets on India’s abundant solar and wind power resources and is aligned with the clean energy goals of Japan and India, the partners noted. (April 22, 2024)
