French state-owned utility EDF said on Friday it has started construction of the 130-MW Ricanto bioenergy plant in Corsica, aimed at addressing the island’s security of supply and energy transition needs
The EUR-800-million (USD 842m) plant, which will run on liquid biomass made from rapeseed or sunflower oil, will replace the Vazzio oil-fired power station. EDF said the new facility will provide renewable, controllable electricity, offering real-time adaptation to the island’s energy needs and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 65%. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply about 20% of Corsica’s annual electricity consumption.
Between 250 and 500 construction workers, including EDF staff and contractors, will be employed to build the project over a three-year period. The site is slated to begin operations progressively starting in the middle of 2027.
