Singapore’s Energy Market Authority seeks new LNG importers.

The Energy Market Authority of Singapore has announced it is seeking to appoint two new liquefied natural gas term importers, Kallanish Energy reports.

The EMA announced on Thursday that it had opened request for proposals for two additional LNG importers in order to increase the use of natural gas within its domestic market, as well as increase competition and options for gas buyers.

The main operation of the appointed importers will be to provide regasified LNG to fulfil Singapore’s growing domestic market demand.

The EMA stated that the importers may also be required to sell short-term/spot regasified LNG, sell LNG volumes for bunkering or re-export, provide handling services to parties who wish to bring in their own upstream LNG supply or share LNG cargoes for unloading at the terminal, and provide gas shipping services to end-users.

Singapore appointed its current LNG importers, Pavilion Energy Singapore and Shell Eastern Trading in 2017, via a similar RFP.

Singapore has placed natural gas as one of the four elements in its “Energy Story”, as it aims to pivot towards cleaner and renewable energy options, alongside solar energy, leveraging regional power grids and emerging low-carbon energy alternatives, such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies, and hydrogen.

According to BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2020 report, Singapore imported a total of 12.7 Billion cubic meters of LNG during 2019, a year-on-year increase of 3.7%. Natural gas accounted for just under 13% of its total energy consumption throughout the year. (July 13, 2020)
