Steag GmbH is in talks with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to expand their existing cooperation under which the German power group is to be supplied with green hydrogen from the UAE.
The partnership between the two companies is one of several pacts agreed between German and UAE-based companies during a visit by economy minister Robert Habeck to the Gulf state in March.
Steag, which has both green energy and coal-fired power plants in its portfolio, is working on projects for industrial-scale green hydrogen production at two locations but in addition to domestic production, the power company will need also to import the clean fuel in order to meet demand in the long term. Steag uses ammonia in its hard coal-fired power plants in the denitrification of flue gases.
The talks are ongoing and involve more potential partners, Steag said on Friday.
The first hydrogen delivery from the UAE to Germany as part of the cooperation was officially received by Habeck on Friday at the port of Hamburg. Steag expects its test delivery of low-carbon ammonia from the Arab country in the coming days. (October 25, 2022)
