Bavaria grants EUR 55m to green hydrogen projects

The German federal state of Bavaria has allocated EUR 55 million (USD 59.49m) in grants to eleven green hydrogen projects as part of the Bavarian electrolyser funding programme.

Each of the eleven projects, featuring electrolysers of between 5 MW and 8.5 MW, will receive EUR 5 million, the state's economy ministry said last week.

The funding notices were handed over by the state's economy minister Hubert Aiwanger last week.

"The companies now investing in hydrogen technology with our support are energy pioneers who will initiate widespread domestic hydrogen production. I thank these companies for their commitment to building a renewable hydrogen economy in the Free State. With hydrogen technology, we are uniquely combining high-tech innovation and climate protection," Aiwanger said.

The programme with a total budget of EUR 150 million divided into two calls is designed to support the development of regional hydrogen production capacities to partially meet hydrogen demand in Bavaria.

The funding supports investments in the construction of electrolysers and directly associated plant components for the on-site production of renewable hydrogen.

The first funding call was oversubscribed by 3.5 times, demonstrating significant interest.

The second call was launched on June 17, 2024. Applications can be submitted until August 9.

Earlier in July, Aiwanger presented the state's Hydrogen Strategy 2.0 to Bavaria's Council of Ministers. Details about the strategy are expected to be published shortly. (July 30, 2024)
