France’s Lhyfe has signed an agreement to get EUR 149 million (USD 171.9m) in government grant funding backing the construction of a 100-MW green hydrogen plant near the Grand Canal du Havre in Normandy, one of its largest production sites to date.
The Nantes-based green hydrogen developer made the announcement on Thursday as the government released the country’s updated National Hydrogen Strategy. The original grant funding decision was announced a year ago.
A contract for the financing has been signed with French public sector investment bank Bpifrance. Under its terms, Lhyfe will receive EUR 18 million by June, with a second tranche to be released in the following months. The entire grant will be distributed over four years.
To be installed near the port city of Le Havre, Seine-Maritime department, the proposed facility is planned to be switched on by 2029 to produce up to 34 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. The production site, spaning 2.8 hectares, will help decarbonise industry and mobility. Some of its output will potentially go for Norwegian fertiliser producer Yara, which operates a nearby facility and is interested in supporting the scheme.
The Green Horizon project was in 2020 selected to be added to the European Commission’s exclusive list of strategic transnational projects for Europe. Lhyfe has already submitted a building permit application and an environmental authorisation request, while grid-connection has already been secured, the developer said.
