French-based AXEGAZ Trading and Technologies, together with its partner Cargill, have loaded bioLNG into one of Avenir’s LNG bunkering vessels at KN Energies’ Klaipeda terminal.
The cargo was ISCC-EU compliant bioLNG, which is to be used as sustainable bunker fuel.
Klaipeda was chosen for its advanced LNG infrastructure together with KN Energies’ innovative approach, AXEGAZ said.
Rising demand for bioLNG bunker fuel is being driven by EU regulations, including FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS.
In addition, Cargill’s pooling model simplifies access to certified renewable fuels across regions.
AXEGAZ co-ordinated the operation together with its partners - LNG terminal, KN Energies; biomethane supplier, Cargill and LNGBV operator, Avenir.
This operation marks an important step in the companies’ efforts to expand their operational footprint to include the Baltic, building on their existing presence in Eastern European markets. AXEGAS said.
Klaipeda was chosen as the starting point for the Baltic expansion, due to its strategic location, a vibrant LNG market, and the innovative and commercially focused approach of KN Energies.
KN Energies operates the Klaipeda LNG terminal, which is built around the FSRU ‘Independence’, providing regasification and LNG reloading services to enable both large-scale and small-scale LNG operations.
The company recently enhanced the terminal’s capabilities with flexible solutions, such as virtual biomethane liquefaction, paving the way for more sustainable LNG solutions.
Another element taken into account by the consortium was KN Energies’ dedication to reducing its CO2 footprint and increasing operational efficiency, such as an electrification project powered by renewable energy.
Measures such as FuelEU Maritime and the inclusion of shipping in the EU ETS, are increasing the need for lower-emission fuels that can help operators meet compliance requirements.
In particular, bioLNG is gaining traction, due to its significantly reduced- and in some certified pathways, even negative – carbon intensity.
Brigitte Morriello, AXEGAZ’s Chairperson said “To ensure maximum impact, we have been actively co-ordinating technical and operational efforts across our internal teams, our partners KN Energies, Cargill and Avenir, with the support of our local representatives in Lithuania, all of whom we would like to thank.
“Through close co-operation with major player of the supply chain, we are bringing LNG and bioLNG to new users in the Baltic, Northwest Europe and the Mediterranean,” she said.
