Croatia's INA awards contracts for 10-MW green H2 plant, solar farm

Croatian oil-and-gas company INA has awarded two contracts worth over EUR 33 million (USD 38.5m) to finance the construction of a commercial green hydrogen production plant at its Rijeka refinery, which would be the first such facility in Croatia.

INA said on Friday it had signed a EUR-22.5-million contract, excluding VAT, with a consortium of Croatian electrical equipment manufacturer Koncar and Siemens Energy for the construction of the green hydrogen production and distribution facilities.

The second contract, worth almost EUR 11 million, went to Koncar, which will build an 11-MW solar plant for the project. INA said it had already procured a 10-MW electrolyser that will run on the electricity generated by the plant.

The project has been awarded up to EUR 15 million in grants under Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, marking INA’s first use of this funding mechanism.

Once in operation, the new facility will produce green hydrogen for use in transport markets and potentially within refinery operations. Production could reach around 1,500 tonnes per year, supporting national targets to scale renewable hydrogen output by 2030 and 2050, INA said.

“Our aim is to diversify our traditional portfolio with renewable energy sources. The renewable hydrogen we will produce can open up new opportunities for us in the market, as well as enhance the sustainability of our Rijeka refinery by reducing emissions,” said Zsuzsanna Ortutay, President of INA’s Management Board.
