Australian LNG player Woodside has signed a long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement with Turkiye’s state-owned natural gas and LNG firm Botas.
Under the agreement, Woodside will supply Botas a total of approximately 5.8 billion cubic meters natural gas equivalent, or 0.5 million tonnes per annum of LNG, for a period of up to nine years starting in 2030, according to a Woodside statement.
Woodside noted that this milestone marks the successful conversion of the non-binding heads of agreement signed in September this year into a binding commitment, reinforcing the shared ambition of both companies to deepen cooperation across the LNG value chain.
The Australian firm said it would supply LNG primarily from the under-construction Louisiana LNG project in the United States, as well as from Woodside’s broader portfolio.
“This supply agreement with Botas represents a strategic milestone for Woodside given it is our first long-term LNG supply arrangement with the Turkish market,” Woodside executive VP and CCO Mark Abbotsford said.
“Woodside also appreciates the support shown by the Turkish and United States governments following the announcement of the HOA earlier this year,” he said.
Louisiana LNG
Woodside is currently looking to sell down further equity in its three-train Louisiana LNG export plant.
At the same time, the firm also wants to have a partner or partners lined up for trains four and five before it pulls the trigger on a final investment decision, CEO Meg O’Neill recently said.
Since the final investment decision on the project in April 2025, construction has continued to progress on the 16 mtpa project, reaching 19 percent completion by the end of the third quarter.
Including trains 4 and 5, the project has a permitted capacity of 27.6 mtpa.
In October, US natural gas pipeline operator Williams purchased stakes in Woodside’s Louisiana LNG project and the Driftwood pipeline.
Williams will hold 10 percent equity in Louisiana HoldCo, with the remaining 90 percent of HoldCo currently owned by Woodside.
Botas boosting LNG business
Botas has signed several LNG deals lately.
The company recently signed 10-year deals to buy LNG from Italian energy firm Eni and SEFE.
The company agreed to buy from SEFE a total of 6 billion cubic meters of LNG over 10 winter periods starting in 2028.
Turkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced the signing of the sales and purchase deals during the recent World LNG Summit & Awards in Istanbul.
Bayraktar noted at the conference that Turkiye has increased its LNG regasification capacity fivefold since 2016, reaching 161 million cubic meters per day, as part of its plans to boost energy security, while the country is also working to become an LNG supply hub.
