Mexico’s Amigo LNG close to FID

The Mexican authorities are to issue permits for Amigo LNG’s project on the Pacific coast within a month, President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed.

In addition, Amigo LNG’s developers aim to make a final investment decision in the first quarter of this year.

Located in the port of Guaymas, Sonora state, the first train will have capacity of 4.2 mill tonnes per year. Capex is estimated at $3.5 bill.

Most of the LNG produced by the project will be shipped to Asian markets, while some will be utilised in Mexico.

“The natural gas liquefaction processing plant is not only for export to Asia but will also help us to transport natural gas to the south of the country,” President Sheinbaum said during an official visit to the port.

Dr Muthu Chezhian, CEO of Amigo’s developer LNG Alliance, said that 20% of the LNG produced would be sent to southern Mexico, including Chiapas state, and to Baja California.

The LNG produced will be 35% cheaper than the volumes imported from other countries, he claimed.

Amigo LNG will also distribute about 5,000 LNG containers per year to mining companies near Guaymas.

“We are creating an energy hub in Guaymas,” Chezhian added.

The facility will increase Mexico’s natural gas storage capacity.

Guaymas’ authorities said that the first phase of Amigo LNG would be able to store natural gas equivalent to five days of Mexico’s demand, local media reported. (February 4, 2026, Source: https://lngjournal.com/index.php/latest-news-mainmenu-47/item/115466-mexico-s-amigo-lng-close-to-fid)
