Iraq’s energy industry is witnessing significant changes as liquefied petroleum gas supplies become increasingly constrained.
This pressure has prompted relevant authorities to take preemptive steps to maintain market stability and meet the needs of citizens in the coming months.
According to a statement from the Iraqi Oil Ministry released on Saturday, the government is working to increase supplies through imports to avert possible shortages in the domestic market.
The ministry clarified that Iraq is not dealing with a serious gas crisis. However, regional and global issues, along with declining output, prompted preventative steps to ensure stable supply.
The declining output affected the availability of cooking gas supplies, resulting in the creation of a gas coupon system to manage distribution and guarantee that citizens receive their assigned quotas.
The ministry announced that Iraq will purchase roughly 200,000 tons of LPG to cover any potential future shortfalls and assure supply continuity despite global market instability and present geopolitical concerns.
Given rising domestic demand, the issue of LPG in Iraq is one of the most pressing current concerns.
This has pushed the government to implement a fuel card system to manage distribution and provide fair access to quotas for all residents.
The Ministry of Oil stated that the new system permits each household to receive two gas cylinders per month, which should adequately meet the needs of an average family. This system relies on computerized distribution processes that promote transparency and facilitate convenient access to the service.
Authorities also acknowledged that Iraq relies on a vast distribution network that includes authorized agents and stations, as well as street vendors. This helps to reduce congestion and provide simple access to gas in different places.
Iraq’s production of LPG is approximately three million tons annually, with plans to raise output to four million tons by 2026, as part of a strategy aiming to achieve self-sufficiency and boost exports in the future.
The government is actively working to enhance the infrastructure of the gas sector through initiatives focused on improving the recovery of associated gas and reducing flaring. (April 12, 2026, Source: https://www.iraqinews.com/iraq/iraq-imports-200000-tons-of-liquefied-petroleum-gas/)
