KGAL GmbH & Co KG and PtX Development have jointly acquired a majority stake in a green hydrogen project at the site of a former nuclear power plant on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast, enabling the potential expansion of its capacity to up to 1.7 GW.
KGAL has carried out the purchase through its KGAL ESPF 6 Fund, the independent investment and asset manager said on Wednesday.
The Lubmin hydrogen project was originated by French green hydrogen developer Lhyfe, envisaging the construction of an 800-MW electrolysis project in the German coastal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to produce up to 330 tonnes of green hydrogen daily. With the potential expansion, the planned facility could achieve an annual hydrogen output of up to 160,000 tonnes. Land and grid access have already been secured.
KGAL, PtX and Lhyfe will jointly advance the project to the next development phase and set the stage for its implementation. Lhyfe will remain a minority owner.
The scheme is one of several proposals for green hydrogen facilities at Lubmin, where eventually 4 GW of electrolyser capacity will be installed. KGAL is already an investor in an up-to-1,050-MW scheme in Lubmin initiated by PtX Development GmbH and developed by GP JOULE. All projects will leverage the site’s proximity to offshore wind farms, a 50Hertz grid connection and hydrogen transport infrastructure.
