Swedish hydrogen tech developer Metacon AB said on Thursday it had been awarded up to SEK 111 million (USD 11.5m/EUR 10.1m) in government support to build a 10-MW green hydrogen production plant in Uppsala, east-central Sweden.
Sweden's Klimatklivet climate investment programme awarded the funding, which represents 55% of the project's total investment of SEK 202 million.
Metacon will build the electrolysis plant at the Hovgarden waste management facility outside Uppsala. Once in operation, the plant will produce around 1,480 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, serving industrial customers and hydrogen refuelling stations in central Sweden, where supply is currently limited, Metacon said.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with commissioning planned for the first quarter of 2029.
According to the company, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 23,000 tonnes per year by replacing diesel in heavy transport and reducing the need to transport hydrogen over long distances.
The facility will also integrate with existing operations at the Hovgarden site by supplying oxygen generated during electrolysis for leachate treatment and recovering waste heat for use within the facility.
Metacon said the plant will also serve as a commercial-scale reference facility to demonstrate its electrolysis technology and integrated hydrogen production systems to prospective customers and partners.
The company added that part of its remaining investment has already been financed through assets acquired from the bankruptcy estate of hydrogen refuelling company Hynion in 2025, with the balance of the funding requirement arising later in the project's development.
