Norwegian energy firm Equinor has taken delivery of its first liquefied natural gas cargo under long-term supply agreements with US LNG exporting giant Cheniere.
Equinor said on Wednesday that the 2021-built 174,000-cbm Isabella, owned by Maran Gas, completed its first LNG loading at Cheniere’s Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana.
The vessel is one of several contracted by Equinor to transport LNG under the agreements with Cheniere.
Isabella is on its way to deliver the LNG cargo to Europe.
Future deliveries will serve customers in Asia and Europe, based on market demand, demonstrating Equinor’s ability to connect US energy supply with growing demand in global markets through its integrated LNG portfolio, the firm said.
Doubling LNG portfolio
Under the 15-year agreements signed in 2022 and 2023, Cheniere’s Gulf Coast facilities will ultimately supply Equinor with around 3.5 million tons of LNG annually.
“These volumes will allow Equinor to double its global LNG portfolio by 2030, strengthening the company’s ability to deliver reliable energy to customers while supporting energy security and economic development in key international markets,” Equinor said.
Equinor, which operates the 4.3 mtpa Hammerfest LNG export plant on the island of Melkoya, Norway, noted that the Cheniere supply agreements are “part of a wider effort to grow a diversified LNG business that offers energy security through long-term, reliable supply arrangements.”
