TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner AMNI have taken a final investment decision to develop the Ima gas field, set to supply about a third of the gas needed for the $10 billion Train 7 project.
Train 7, currently under construction, is envisaged to start up before the end of 2027 and will lift Nigeria LNG’s overall liquefaction capacity from 22 to 30 million tons per year.
Tapping the Ima gas field is vital to ensure feedgas for the Nigeria LNG expansion, with the French lead developer promising to create “sustainable value for its partners, as well as for the host country Nigeria.”
Low-cost gas field development
Situated near Bonny Island, Ima is a low-cost, low-emission offshore development with a simplified platform design, powered by electricity from the mainland. All main contractors are Nigerian companies, with nearly 60% of the workforce to be mobilised from local communities.
Nicolas Terraz, TotalEnergies VP Exploration & Production, said FID on the Ima gas project marked a milestone in the company’s integrated gas development and LNG export strategy in Nigeria.
“Following the Ubeta project, sanctioned in 2024 and expected to start up next year, Ima demonstrates our ability to develop new low-cost, low-emission gas resources,” he said, pointing at incentives by the Nigerian government for non-associated gas developments.
Construction delays at NLNG
Development and construction of the Nigeria LNG project has been beset with delays, with the overall NLNG venture still being under a force majeure that was imposed following a flooding back in 2022.
“Force majeure will be lifted once the project reaches a 90% utilisation rate”, Managing Director Adeleye Falade told the Gastech 2026 conference in Bangkok. He specifyed the plant is currently running at 83% utilisation.
NLNG is majority owned (49%) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, while foreign partner include Shell (25.6%), TotalEnergies (15%) and Eni (10.4%).
