Hoegh Evi to develop Malaysian LNG terminal

Norwegian FSRU player Hoegh Evi has signed a deal with Sarawak’s state-owned oil and gas company Petros to jointly develop an FSRU-based LNG import terminal in Malaysia’s Sarawak state.

Under the agreement, Petros and Höegh Evi will jointly develop, own and operate the Kuching LNG terminal, comprising a floating storage and regasification unit, mooring infrastructure, subsea and onshore pipelines, and onshore receiving facilities, according to a Hoegh Evi statement.

The project is expected to contribute to Sarawak’s energy security, support growing energy demand, and enable the development of new industries in Kuching.

According to Hoegh Evi, the LNG terminal will be a key catalyst for Kuching Low-Carbon development by supplying natural gas for power generation in Kuching.

2029

The partnership brings together Petros’ role as the master developer of KLCH, with Höegh Evi’s experience as owner, developer, and operator of FSRUs and maritime energy infrastructure.

Hoegh Evi said the project is being developed with the aim of delivering its first gas by end of 2029, with Petros and Höegh Evi continuing to assess opportunities to accelerate delivery in line with growing demand.

The LNG terminal will support Sarawak’s evolving energy needs and provide a range of services, including small-scale LNG distribution, truck loading, bunkering, storage and reloading activities.

Both companies will also explore opportunities for knowledge sharing, training and skills development to strengthen local capabilities to support Sarawak’s long-term energy development, Hoegh Evi said.

Höegh Evi has one of the largest FSRU fleets in the industry.

To date, the company has owned and operated eight LNG carriers, successfully built ten FSRUs, and safely completed more than around 12,000 ship-to-ship operations, according to its website. (September 30, 2026, Source: https://lngprime.com/asia/hoegh-evi-to-develop-malaysian-lng-terminal/197734/)
