Taiwan’s CPC makes progress with Alaska LNG deal

Taiwan’s CPC Corp is making progress on buying LNG and investing in the planned Glenfarne-led Alaska LNG project, according to Taiwan’s economy ministry.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs released a statement on Wednesday regarding the US proposal for Taiwan’s participation in the Alaska LNG project.

This followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday during a mid-term rally in Alaska.

Trump said that Taiwan “has just agreed to buy 30 percent of the gas coming off the (Alaska) pipeline for the next 20 years.”

He said that Taiwan would also “invest $4.4 billion into the Alaska project on top of $50 billion already committed by South Korea.”

In March 2025, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that CPC signed a letter of intent with Alaska Gasline Development Corporation to buy LNG and invest in the planned Alaska LNG project.

During the same month, US energy firm and LNG terminal developer Glenfarne became the lead developer of the Alaska LNG project.

Phase One of the Alaska LNG project consists of a 739-mile (1,287 km) pipeline, while Phase Two of the project will add the LNG liquefaction terminal in Nikiski and related infrastructure to export 20 mtpa of LNG.

Glefarne previously revealed that it expects both phases to cost up to $54.5 billion.

“Significant” progress

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said in the statement on Wednesday that CPC has made “significant progress with the US developer after nearly a year and a half of intensive negotiations and careful evaluation.”

The ministry did not say whether CPC had signed a binding deal.

The ministry explained that, according to current plans, the areas of cooperation include the annual procurement of 6 million metric tons of LNG per year, as well as participation in project development, with an estimated total investment of up to $4.4 billion.

Through long-term energy procurement and project investments, these efforts will help promote the diversification of natural gas supplies, enhance the flexibility of supply management, further strengthen Taiwan’s energy resilience, and deepen cooperation between Taiwan and the United States, it said.

According to the ministry, the Alaska LNG project offers a strategic geographical advantage, as LNG supplies can reach Taiwan directly via the Pacific route, helping to diversify natural gas transportation routes and mitigate geopolitical supply risks.

If the project proceeds smoothly and on schedule, it is expected to begin supplementing Taiwan’s domestic natural gas supply as early as 2032, serving as a “key” component of Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to diversify its gas supply sources, the ministry said.

The ministry said that CPC would continue to coordinate with relevant US entities on procurement, investment, and related cooperative matters, and would conduct feasibility studies and submit budget proposals in accordance with company procedures.

The ministry added that CPC would determine specific investment arrangements, equity stakes, and related terms through subsequent negotiations, in accordance with the procedures outlined in the commercial agreement, with the aim of expanding the company’s operations and meeting domestic energy supply needs.
